Quicken updates and version numbers
Check which release you are on, install updates without breaking your data file, and fix an update that refuses to apply.
Update Quicken in five steps
Check the version you are running
Windows: Help → About Quicken. Mac: Quicken → About Quicken. Note the release number (for example R60.15) — every support conversation and every release note is keyed to it.
Back up before you update
File → Backup and save a copy outside your normal data folder. Updates occasionally convert the data file format, and a pre-update backup is the only clean way back.
Install the update
Windows: Help → Check for Updates, then let the patcher close and reopen Quicken. Mac: updates arrive through the in-app updater or the Mac App Store depending on where you bought it.
Verify the update applied
Reopen Help → About Quicken and confirm the release number changed. If it did not, the patcher was blocked — usually by antivirus or a non-administrator account.
Validate the file after a major release
File → File Operations → Validate & Repair once after a major version jump. This catches conversion issues early, while your pre-update backup is still recent.
When the update fails
Update downloads but never installs
Run Quicken as administrator (right-click → Run as administrator on Windows) and disable real-time antivirus scanning for the install, then retry Help → Check for Updates.
Update loops and asks again on every launch
The patcher is failing silently. Download the full patch installer manually, close Quicken completely, and run the installer rather than using the in-app updater.
Quicken won't open after an update
Restore your pre-update backup, then reinstall the current release cleanly. Our step-by-step startup fix guide covers the Windows 11 case in detail.
Bank downloads broke right after updating
A release change can invalidate cached connection records. Reset the account under Online Services, and if that fails, deactivate and reconnect linking to your existing register.
Which Quicken versions are still supported?
- Quicken 2016 and earlier — Fully discontinued. No online services, no bank downloads, no support.
- Quicken 2017 — Discontinued. Connected services ended; the software still opens for local record-keeping only.
- Quicken 2018–2019 — Out of service. Subscription conversion required for any online feature.
- Quicken Classic (subscription) — Current. Online services stay active while the subscription is active.
Discontinued releases keep working offline. What ends is connected services — bank downloads, quotes, and mobile sync — which is why an old version suddenly "stops working" without any change on your computer.
