How to Move Quicken to a New Computer Without Losing Data
Getting a new computer is exciting — until you realize Quicken doesn't automatically come with it. Moving Quicken isn't just about reinstalling the software. You need to transfer your data file correctly, or you risk losing years of financial history.
This guide walks through the exact steps for moving Quicken from an old Windows or Mac computer to a new one, including what to do if you no longer have access to the old machine.
Before You Start: What You'll Be Moving
Moving Quicken involves two separate things:
- The Quicken program — the software itself (you'll reinstall this fresh on the new computer)
- Your Quicken data file (.QDF) — all your transactions, accounts, budgets, and history (this must be carefully transferred)
Never try to copy the program files from one computer to another. Always reinstall Quicken from scratch and then bring your data file over separately.
Back Up Your Data on the Old Computer
This is the most important step. Before touching anything else, create a fresh backup.
- Open Quicken on your old computer
- Go to File → Backup and Restore → Back Up Quicken File
- Save the backup to a USB drive, external hard drive, or cloud folder (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox)
- Note the exact file name and location
The backup file will end in .QDF-backup (Windows) or have a .quicken extension with a date stamp (Mac).
Also note your Quicken subscription login email — you'll need it to activate on the new computer.
Deactivate Quicken on the Old Computer (Optional but Recommended)
Quicken subscriptions are typically tied to one or two devices. Deactivating on the old computer frees up that slot cleanly.
- On the old computer, open Quicken
- Go to Edit → Preferences → Quicken ID & Cloud Accounts
- Note your Quicken ID (email address)
- Sign out of the Quicken ID
You don't need to uninstall Quicken from the old computer before doing this.
Install Quicken on the New Computer
- Go to quicken.com on the new computer
- Sign in with your Quicken ID
- Download the installer for your version (Classic Deluxe, Premier, Business & Personal, etc.)
- Run the installer and follow the prompts
- Sign in with your Quicken ID when prompted — this activates your subscription on the new device
Do not open your data file yet.
Transfer Your Data File to the New Computer
Connect your USB drive or open your cloud folder on the new computer, then:
- Copy your .QDF-backup file to a memorable location on the new computer — for example,
Documents\Quicken\
To restore it into Quicken:
- Open Quicken on the new computer
- Go to File → Backup and Restore → Restore from Backup File
- Browse to the .QDF-backup file you transferred
- Click Restore
- Quicken will create a new active data file from the backup
Your data — all transactions, accounts, budgets, and investment history — will appear exactly as it was on the old computer.
Reconnect Your Online Accounts
After restoring your data, your bank connections won't automatically carry over. You'll need to reactivate each account's online connection:
- Go to Tools → Account List
- For each account, click Edit → Online Services → Set Up Now
- Sign in to your bank and match the online account to your Quicken register
This is a normal part of any Quicken migration — it doesn't affect your existing transaction history.
What If You No Longer Have Access to the Old Computer?
If your old computer died, was stolen, or you've already returned it:
- If you used Quicken Cloud sync: Some data may be recoverable through your Quicken account at quicken.com
- If you have an old backup file: Follow Steps 3–5 above using that backup
- If you have no backup and no cloud data: Data recovery may still be possible depending on your situation — call us at +1 800-209-8240 for guidance
This is exactly why regular backups are so important.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just copy the Quicken program folder to my new computer?
No. Quicken requires a proper installation to work correctly — it registers components in Windows that copying the folder doesn't replicate. Always reinstall from the official installer.
Do I need to buy Quicken again for the new computer?
No. If you have an active subscription, you can install Quicken on a new device by signing in with the same Quicken ID. Check Quicken's current terms for the number of simultaneous devices allowed.
My data file restored but my investment history is missing. What happened?
Investment history and attachments are included in a full .QDF-backup. If they're missing, you may have restored from a partial or older backup. Check if you have a more complete backup file available.
How long does the whole process take?
For most users, 30–60 minutes. The bulk of the time is downloading and installing Quicken on the new computer. The actual data transfer takes a few minutes.
Something went wrong during the transfer — can you help?
Yes. Our technicians handle Quicken migrations regularly. We can connect to your new computer remotely and complete the transfer safely while you watch. Call +1 800-209-8240.
