How to Convert QIF to QFX for Quicken (Step-by-Step, 2026)

Modern Quicken Classic no longer imports .QIF for bank or credit-card accounts — it accepts .QFX (Web Connect). Here's the exact way to convert without losing transactions.

Why this is needed: Quicken dropped QIF import for bank, credit card, and cash accounts years ago (investment accounts are still allowed). QFX is the modern Web Connect format Quicken expects. This is why banks that only export QIF need a conversion step.
1

Back up your Quicken data file

In Quicken, click File → Backup and Restore → Back up Quicken File. Save the .QDF-backup to a safe location before importing anything.

2

Export the QIF from your bank or old software

Log in to your bank (or open the software that holds the data) and export the register as QIF. Keep the file to a single account per QIF for cleaner imports.

3

Open a QIF-to-QFX converter

Use a trusted converter such as ProperSoft QIF2QFX, MoneyThumb, or Bank2QFX. Free web converters can corrupt amounts or dates — stick to established desktop tools.

4

Set the account type and Financial Institution ID

In the converter, choose your Quicken account type (Bank, Credit Card, Investment). If prompted, pick a generic Financial Institution or use FID 3000 — this tells Quicken to import as Web Connect.

5

Save the converted .QFX file

Export to .QFX (Web Connect). Save it somewhere you can find — Downloads is fine. Do not rename the extension by hand.

6

Import the QFX into Quicken

In Quicken open File → File Import → Web Connect File and select your new .QFX. When prompted, choose Link to existing and pick the correct register — never Create new unless the account is brand new.

7

Reconcile and remove duplicates

Open the register, sort by date, and scan the imported transactions. If duplicates appear (common when the QIF overlaps existing history), use Edit → Find/Replace → Delete on the exact duplicates only.

Common Conversion Issues

  • Wrong FID / Bank ID — set the converter to a generic Web Connect FID (often 3000) if unsure
  • Dates flip MM/DD ↔ DD/MM — set the input date format in the converter to match your QIF
  • Split transactions collapse — some free converters flatten splits; use a paid tool for investment or multi-category data
  • Amounts show negative on income — flip the sign in the converter's mapping options
