How to Fix Quicken Error CC-501 (Bank Sync Failure)
Quicken Error CC-501 shows up when Quicken can't complete a bank download. It's a common — and usually temporary — issue that most users can clear in a few minutes without touching their data file.
This guide explains what CC-501 actually means and walks through the five fixes that resolve it in the vast majority of cases.
What Does Quicken Error CC-501 Mean?
CC-501 is a temporary communication issue between Quicken's servers and your bank. Your data file is fine — Quicken simply couldn't complete the handshake needed to download transactions.
The most common causes are:
- A rolling refresh on Quicken's financial institution profile
- A recent change to your bank's connection method
- An outdated version of Quicken that doesn't support the new handshake
- A stale saved connection for the affected account
Wait 24 Hours and Retry
CC-501 is often cleared by Quicken's own server refresh, which runs on a rolling schedule. Before changing any settings, wait at least 24 hours and then run One Step Update again. In many cases the error is gone with no further action needed.
Update Quicken to the Latest Release
Banks periodically change their security protocols, and older versions of Quicken can't complete the new handshake — which surfaces as CC-501.
To update:
- Open Quicken
- Click Help in the top menu bar
- Select Check for Updates
- Install any available update and restart Quicken
Then retry One Step Update (Ctrl+Alt+U on Windows, ⌘+Option+U on Mac).
Reset the Affected Account in Quicken
Resetting the online connection forces Quicken to re-establish the link with your bank. This is the single fix that clears CC-501 most often.
- Go to Tools → Account List (or Accounts on Mac)
- Click Edit next to the affected account
- Open the Online Services tab
- Click Reset Account and follow the prompts
Enter your bank credentials when prompted and let Quicken finish the sync. Your existing register data is not touched.
Deactivate and Reactivate the Connection
If Reset Account didn't clear it, do a full deactivate and reactivate. This rebuilds the connection from scratch using the latest profile from your bank.
To deactivate:
- Open the account's Online Services tab
- Click Deactivate and confirm
To reactivate:
- In the same tab, click Set Up Now
- Search for your bank and sign in
- Match the online account to your existing Quicken account when prompted
- Click Connect and run One Step Update again
Refresh Your Bank's Financial Institution Profile
Quicken caches a local copy of your bank's connection settings. When the bank updates its systems, that cache can go stale and trigger CC-501 on every sync.
- Go to Tools → Financial Institution List
- Find your bank and click Update/Refresh
- Restart Quicken and run One Step Update
Still Stuck on CC-501?
If you've worked through all five steps and Quicken is still throwing CC-501, the problem could be:
- • A bank that has moved from Direct Connect to Web Connect
- • A conflict with another installed application or firewall
- • A profile mismatch that needs to be corrected on Quicken's side
Our remote support technicians handle CC-501 every day. We can connect securely, identify the exact cause, and restore your bank sync while you watch — usually in under 30 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Quicken Error CC-501 caused by my bank or by Quicken?
CC-501 is a temporary communication failure between Quicken's servers and your bank. It's not caused by your data file, and it's almost never a security issue.
How long should I wait before retrying CC-501?
Wait at least 24 hours before doing any deeper troubleshooting. Quicken refreshes its financial institution profiles on a rolling schedule, and the error often clears on its own.
Will resetting the account in Quicken lose my transaction history?
No. Resetting the online connection only re-establishes the bank link. The transactions already in your Quicken register stay exactly where they are.
What if CC-501 comes back every few days?
A recurring CC-501 usually means the bank has changed its connection method or Quicken's stored profile is stale. Deactivating and reconnecting the account, then updating Quicken, resolves this in most cases.
