How to Import a CSV File Into Quicken (Step-by-Step)
Quicken can't open a CSV file directly — but you can convert it to a format Quicken understands and import cleanly, without breaking your data file.
Quick Overview
Quicken imports QFX (Web Connect), QIF, and OFX. CSV is not on that list — but almost every bank exports CSV, so the workflow is: CSV → converter → QFX or QIF → import into Quicken.
- Use QFX for checking, savings, and credit-card accounts
- Use QIF for cash, asset, or manual accounts
- Always back up your Quicken file before importing
- Import narrow date ranges to avoid duplicates
Clean Up the CSV File First
Open the CSV in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets. Make sure the file has these columns, in this order:
- Date (MM/DD/YYYY)
- Payee / Description
- Amount (negative for withdrawals, positive for deposits)
- Category (optional)
- Memo (optional)
Remove header rows, running balances, and any blank lines. Save as .csv.
Convert the CSV to QFX or QIF
Use a trusted converter such as CSV2QFX, ProperSoft, or MoneyThumb. The workflow is:
- Open the converter and load your CSV
- Map the columns to Date, Payee, and Amount
- Enter your bank's routing number and account number when prompted (this lets Quicken match the account)
- Export as .qfx (recommended) or .qif
Back Up Your Quicken Data File
Before any import, run File → Backup and Restore → Back up Quicken File. If the import creates duplicates or miscategorizes transactions, you can restore in one click.
Import the QFX or QIF File
For QFX:
- Double-click the .qfx file — Quicken opens automatically
- Choose Link to an existing account and pick the correct account
- Click Import — transactions land in the register
For QIF:
- Open Quicken → File → Import → QIF File
- Select the account and the .qif file
- Check the transaction date range and click Import
Review the Register and Categorize
After import, scroll the register and confirm:
- The opening balance matches your bank
- No duplicate rows from a prior download
- Payees and categories look right — bulk-recategorize if needed
