How to Fix Quicken Error OL-393-A (Bank Connection Blocked)

OL-393-A means Quicken opened a session with your bank but couldn't complete it. It's a connection error — not a data-file issue — and it's usually fixable in a few minutes.

What Does OL-393-A Actually Mean?

OL-393-A is thrown when Quicken sends the sign-on request to your bank but the response doesn't come back cleanly. The most common causes:

  • Your bank's branding profile in Quicken is out of date
  • The bank changed connection methods (Direct Connect → Express Web Connect)
  • Your saved credentials no longer match what the bank expects
  • A temporary outage on the bank's server side
1

Refresh Your Bank's Branding Profile

This is the fix that clears OL-393-A most often. It forces Quicken to re-download your bank's current connection settings.

  1. Go to Tools → Online Center
  2. Hold Ctrl+F3 (Windows) to open the branding menu
  3. Click Refresh, then close the Online Center
  4. Run One Step Update again
2

Update Quicken to the Latest Release

Banks push protocol updates regularly. An older Quicken build often can't complete the new handshake, which surfaces as OL-393-A.

  1. Open Quicken
  2. Help → Check for Updates
  3. Install any pending update and restart
3

Verify Your Bank Credentials on the Bank's Website

Log in to your bank directly (not through Quicken). If the bank forces a password reset, security question update, or new terms of service, that alone can trigger OL-393-A on every Quicken sync until it's cleared.

4

Deactivate and Reactivate the Affected Account

Rebuilding the connection from scratch resolves OL-393-A when a stale profile is the cause.

  1. Tools → Account List → Edit next to the account
  2. Open the Online Services tab and click Deactivate
  3. Click Set Up Now, search for your bank, and sign in
  4. Match the online account to your existing Quicken account when prompted
5

Validate the Data File

If OL-393-A persists after a clean reactivation, run File → Validate and Repair File → Validate File. This rules out any corruption on Quicken's side before you go deeper.

OL-393-A Still Won't Go Away?

Persistent OL-393-A usually points to a bank profile mismatch or a Direct Connect account that needs a different setup path. Our technicians can connect remotely and clear it while you watch — most cases finish in under 30 minutes.
