How to Restore a Quicken Backup File (Windows and Mac)
A safe, tested procedure to restore a Quicken backup and confirm every transaction came through — with recovery tips if the backup itself is damaged.
Before You Restore
- Rename or move the current .QDF file so it isn't overwritten
- Confirm the backup extension: .QDF-BACKUP (Windows) / .quickenbackup (Mac)
- Copy the backup from cloud storage to a local folder first
- Close online-services sessions before restoring
Locate the Backup File
On Windows, backups are usually in Documents\Quicken\Backup unless you changed the path. On Mac, look in ~/Documents/Quicken or the folder shown in Quicken → Preferences → Backup.
Open the Restore Dialog
In Quicken, choose File → Backup and Restore → Restore from Backup File. On Mac, use File → Restore from Backup.
Select the Backup and Confirm Destination
Browse to the .QDF-BACKUP file, select it, and choose a fresh destination path so you don't overwrite the working file. Quicken will restore into a new .QDF.
Reconcile the Last Statement
Once restored, open the account with the latest bank statement and reconcile. This confirms the backup is complete and no transactions are missing.
If the Backup Is Damaged
Try File → Validate and Repair File on the restored copy. If Validate reports unrecoverable errors, hold Ctrl+Shift and run Super Validate. Persistent corruption usually needs a technician-assisted rebuild.
Backup Won't Restore?
If Validate or Super Validate can't repair the file, we can recover transactions from the raw backup and rebuild a working data file safely.
